 
Town of Jacksonville
Established with the construction and opening of the first Courthouse in "Wantlands Ferry", in 1757. In 1785 the name was changed to "Onslow Courthouse", which conveyed the principal activity of the era. Just prior to the "War between the States", the county seat finally got it's current name of Jacksonville, in honor of Andrew Jackson.
Camp Lejeune
You can tour Camp Lejeune today. Enter via the main gate at U.S. Highway 24, and stop at the Visitor's Information Center. Otherwise, get a taste by taking N.C. Highway 172 from Sneads Ferry to Swansboro.
The Beirut Memorial is located on Highway. 24 in Jacksonville near the entrance to Camp Johnson. Carved in the granite wall are the names of those American servicemen who lost their lives in Lebanon during a 1983 terrorist attack. Keeping vigil over the memorial is a lone bronze statue of a Marine.
