Lighthouse painted on actual paddle recovered from New River. A Mavis Noblot Original.    Before the US Coast Guard, there was the US Lifesaving Service. The federal government agreed to form such a service in the 1840's and in the beginning, effort was concentrated in the northeast and Great Lakes region.
Further expansion was hindered by the Civil War. However in the 1870's, a number of new stations were ordered for the North Carolina coast

Information Provided by a true Outer Banks Native . . .

First, Congratulations on a fantastic site. I just wanted to offer a quick correction to your North Carolina Lighthouses page. On the page you show for Bodie Island lighthouse an incorrect phonetic pronunciation. The correct pronunciation of Bodie is "body" not "bo-dee" as listed. This is a very common and, being a thirteenth generation outer banker and descendent of former owners of the land whereon the lighthouse now stands, an equally annoying misconception. Further credit to the correct pronunciation of "Bodie" can also be found on the marble dedication plaque inside the lighthouse marking it clearly as "Body's Island Light House".

Though, I believe neither are listed on your site, F.Y.I. other very common N.C. Outer Banks mispronunciations also include the names of the villages of Rodanthe, on Hatteras Island, and Corolla, on the Currituck Banks. Rodanthe, (often mispronunced "ro-danth"), is pronunced "ro-dan-thee" - the "e" is long, as in the first "e" in "even". And, Corolla, (often mispronunced "kuh-ro-luh" - like the car made by Toyota), is pronunced "kuh-rahl-luh" - the "o"s are both short, as in the "o" in "often".

However trivial these minor infractions may seem, I am sure that you will join me in the sentiment that just as we want to continually attract tourists to the many gems our great state has to offer its visitors, and just as we are proud to extend our unique and native graciousness and hospitality to our many visitors, we are also proud to welcome them to "on-slow", not "own-slow" county and would be equally pleased to invite them to visit "body" and not "bo-dee" Island lighthouse.
