In the 19th Century, peanuts were a major agricultural crop in this area. Today you can still visit historic Poplar Grove Plantation in Scotts Hill, just a few miles south of Hampstead, to take you back to an earlier era.
The Manor Home at Popular Grove Plantation dates back to 1850, and has been completely restored to its true grandeur, providing one of the most accurate depictions of plantation life you will find anywhere. All three floors of the antebellum Manor House are now on exhibit to the general public, a featured presentation and focal point of the plantation. Where the Foy family once tilled the land, you will find a series of interpretive exhibits, along with classes and special events on a regular basis.
Today, the estate covers 16 acres and allows the visitor to tour the Manor House, tenant house, smoke house, green house, blacksmith, and green house. Call 910-686-4868 for more information. The Manor is also home of the Herb Fair held the fourth Saturday in March.
A restaurant is also on the grounds. Be sure to make a visit to the Country Store also a part of your stay. For more information on prices, exhibits and events, call 910-686-9989.
