Florida Keys, chain of islands, islets, and
reefs, southern Florida, between the Straits of Florida and Florida Bay,
extending southwest and west from Virginia Key, south of Miami Beach to the Dry
Tortugas, for about 360 km (about 225 mi). The keys are chiefly limestone and
coral formations. The larger islands of the group are
Key West,
Key Largo,
Sugarloaf Key,
Duck Key,
Marathon, and Boca Chica Key. The keys, distributed between Dade and Monroe
counties for administrative purposes, were devastated in a 1935 hurricane.
Several of the islands are popular vacation resorts, and fishing and tourism are
the leading industries. A causeway extends from the mainland to
Key West, the
southernmost city of the conterminous United States.
Key West, city, seat of Monroe County,
southern Florida, a port of entry on the island of
Key West, at the southwestern
end of the Florida Keys; incorporated 1828. The southernmost city of the
conterminous United States, it is connected to the mainland by the Overseas
Highway. The city's economy revolves around tourism, commercial fishing, and
U.S. Navy and Coast Guard installations, and a noted artists' colony is here.
Among the points of interest in
Key West, which is the seat of a junior college,
are the homes of the naturalist John J. Audubon and the writer Ernest Hemingway,
a lighthouse (1846), and a tropical fish aquarium. Called Cayo Hueso ("island of
bones") by Spanish explorers, who found human bones here, it has been an
important U.S. port since the early 1820s.
Key West was in Union hands during
the American Civil War. Population (1980) 24,382; (1990) 24,832.
Florida, Straits of, channel, between the
southern tip of Florida and the island of Cuba, linking the Atlantic Ocean and
the Gulf of Mexico. Traversed by the Gulf Stream, the channel is about 483 km
(about 300 mi) long and from 80 to 241 km (50 to 150 mi) wide.
